CUPE 2278 2010 - 2011 Executive Committee

Geraldina Polanco
President
Sociology, 4th year PhD
My motivations for being actively involved with the Union are academic as well as personal. Academically, I have been intrigued by the interplay between public policy and economic development since my undergraduate studies. Beyond my academic interest, I am a firm supporter of quality, accessible post-secondary education. Click for more...

Bargaining (Chair), Grievances (Chair)
Philosophy, 6th year PhD
I am actively involved with the union for two main reasons. First, because although unions have recently been publicly demonized for doing noble work, they still do noble work and I am proud to do some of that work. Second, by protecting TA’s rights—and the labour they provide—I believe that I am benefiting my academic discipline.

I come from a public service employment background and am very eager to continue to lobby for the hard work and contributions that teaching assistants make as educators on the UBC Campus.

Chandra Martini

I went to a general meeting and was struck by how much TA working conditions are determined by their union representation, and excited by the important issues that were coming up in bargaining. A stronger union = better rights so I wanted to help get the word out.

I am interested in unionizing in British Columbia, and particularly unions at UBC.

I got involved with CUPE 2278 to gain experience and learn about how this union functions during a bargaining year. I'm motivated by my interest in labour law, but also by a family history of involvement in the labour movement.
